3 Important Things when Choosing a Photographer

1. Do we vibe?

a. I’ve said it time and time again, but one of the most important things when choosing your photographer it’s SO SO SO SO SO important to vibe with your photographer! The short answer? It’ll make for better photos and a better day. The long answer? If you vibe with them, you can trust them. If you trust them, you can feel more comfortable and vulnerable. If you feel more comfortable, that’s gunna make for some hella awesome photos. It’s a whole cycle… trust me.

b. But in all truth, you want your personalities to match, you want your interests to match so that your day can be captured how YOU want. Do you want a photographer that is more interested in flat-lays and florals, or someone that isn’t concerned about the PERFECT shot, but rather the emotion that might come from it? There is no right or wrong answer here, the choice is completely yours and what matters to you, but it is definitely something to think about.

c. The way I see it, if you are more comfortable, that’s when the real emotion comes.

2. Do you like their style?

a. Style, style, style. This doesn’t just mean those candid, natural photos that you love, it also means editing style. When you are choosing a photographer, you are choosing them from start to finish. That means, you may love the emotion and actual photos they capture, but if you aren’t loving how they process those photos (i.e. light vs. dark, etc.) then maybe they aren’t for you. AND THAT’S OKAY!!! Find someone that captures both the moments AND how you envision them.

3. Budget & Availability

a. Of course I understand that budget plays a big part in choosing your photographer. I won’t tell you one way or the other to pay $10,000 or $1,000 for a photographer, I just urge you to consider the VALUE. Consider the experience, or photos that you know may come from one photographer versus another. Value isn’t always necessarily in the form of tangible items, it comes in all the things I mentioned above too. There is VALUE in trusting your photographer, there is VALUE in believing in them. I understand that not everyone has endless budgets, and truthfully, maybe you aren’t able to stretch too much, just make sure you know what you’re getting.

b. Photographers are also one of the first vendors to be booked after choosing your venue, often times that means a year or more in advance. If you have your heart set on a photographer, don’t wait and reach out to them for your date!
